Scouts all set for Wintercamp mudfest
06/01/2012
3,000 scouts from across the UK are preparing for a muddy and gusty Wintercamp at Gilwell Park Scout Activity Centre.
After the adverse weather conditions throughout the UK this week, campers have been advised to ‘storm lash’ their tents to prevent them from blowing away. Nevertheless hardy scouts are eager to attend the fun-filled event.
Adventurous outdoor pursuits
Wintercamp is an annual event held at Gilwell Park, which encourages scouts to participate in many daring and exciting outdoor activities. These include horseriding through the forest, brush boarding, caving and an ice rink. Scouts will brave sleeping in tents for two nights in temperatures barely above freezing as well as catering for themselves, cooking on open fires.
Oliver Wood, leader from Phoenix Explorer Scouts in Basingstoke, who was setting up camp on Friday morning, said ‘It’s good fun camping at this time of year. Our scouts and explorers are looking forward to all the activities and meeting scouts from across the country.’
Wintry weather, no problem
Wild weather has not discouraged scouts in the past, as Wintercamp has endured mud-baths, heavy downpours and even heavy snow in recent years. The organisers work hard to make sure everyone is safe, prepared and having maximum fun.
'Mud, glorious mud,’ exclaimed event organiser, Nick Iles. ‘If anything the conditions seem to make the event much more fun for all the young people. We have a large team and weather is an incredibly important element when compiling our activity risk assessments.'
